Topics include the ADA Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Responsibility, categories of professional obligation, ethical-decision making, the relationship between patient and professional, and jurisprudence related issues.

Discussion of patient related ethical and legal cases will involve scenarios brought up before the BORID in MA and / or liability insurance company consultations for pending cases.

Learning Objectives

Review the meaning of ethics and professionalism and the relationship to dentistry

Discuss the fiduciary relationship

Apply sources of ethical norms in clinical cases

Apply applicable state licensure regulations in clinical cases

Review the importance of record keeping and legal documentation in clinical practice

 

Presenters:

Paul Farsai DMD, MPH is an Associate Professor in the Department of General Dentistry at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM) and practices in his private practice in Swampscott, MA. He is Chair-elect of the New England Chapter of the American College of Dentists and is a dental consultant to the BORID in Massachusetts as well as several law offices in MA and NJ which deal with dental liability cases. He directs 4 pre-doctoral courses and teaches in 4 other pre- and post-doctoral courses at BUGSDM on topics such as Evidence-Based Dentistry, Practice Management, Ethics, Behavioral Sciences and Special Needs.

Catherine Frankl Sarkis, JD, MBA is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy & Health Services Research Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM). She is a graduate of the Boston University School of Law with a concentration in Healthcare Law and the Boston University Questrom School of Business with a concentration in Healthcare Management. She teaches courses in bioethics, healthcare law, and research compliance at the Boston University Medical Center Campus. She also teaches continuing education courses in risk management, record-keeping and legal documentation for dentists. She provides licensees ethics remediation courses for MA BORID, as well as other state Boards of Registration in Dentistry.
